Word Prompt Flashes

A Spot of Tea and Black Friday are a couple of flash fiction pieces. The prompts for the first one was to write 99 words and use two random objects. The word generator gave me doughnut and scarf, so that obviously meant I had to write a police story. The second prompt was to use the words sense, cents, scents, and sent. I decided that was too easy, so I added a 100 word limit and made a seasonally appropriate piece.

Monster Library

Monster Library is a story about a library. It's a 100 word flash fiction piece written to a random photo.

Hidden Moments

You never know what you are going to find in someone's junk drawer, I guess. Dad had misplaced his reading glasses—as an avid reader, this was a major catastrophe for him— and so I had come over to help search his apartment. It wasn't a big place, so I figured it couldn't take all that long.
I texted Sally and told her I might be a little late picking her up, but not to worry. The trip to the retirement community was another stop, roll, stop brain-cell-killing masochist's thrill ride through heavy traffic, just like any other day. When I finally got to dad's, I let myself in.

Old Dusty Desk

Old Dusty Desk is a story where an old man is the main character. The emotional pivot for this post is the word confusion.

Falling

Falling is a tragedy story and comes from current events.

In our workshop we were challenged to find new angles to present stories, so the concept behind the piece was to reveal the disaster through the eyes of an observer who turns out to be an inanimate object.

The Something Series

Amelia had a 150 word short story challenge based on the saying "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue." The challenge was to write short stories of exactly 150 words, that had nothing to do with weddings or marriage, etc. and contained various words or phases she selected. In addition to all these constraints, I chose to place a single word theme of my own in all four stories. My challenge is for you to find the word threading through all four stories.

Asking for Directions

This is reblogged from here.

"This is the last time I listen to you, sis," said the older sister.
"What are you mad at me for? This trip wasn't my idea."
"What? How is it my fault that you didn't get your letter to Santa written and mailed?" she asked. Tears formed in the corners of her eyes.
The younger sister wasn't paying attention. She just scanned the tundra, covered in snow as far as the eye could see in every direction.
Snow squeaked and scrunched under their shoes as they trudged on.
The older sister sniffled. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For getting us lost."
"Lost?"
"Yeah. We should've found it by now." She shook her head, sending the tassel on the red hat bobbing drunkenly. "But, I can't find Santa's North Pole."
"Oh, c'mon, Nora." She patted her big sis on the arm. "Look, all we need to do is get one of Santa's reindeer there to give us directions! It can't be that hard!"

The Dark Road

The Dark Road is a ghost story. The story leaves the reader in suspense.

A Post Card

A Post Card is another picture prompt piece. The picture looked to be either a fake or of a dimwit hunter who doesn't know that a bobcat is, with giant glowing eyes, just a few feet away and watching him and the dead buck. So, since the photo is sort of frightening, I decided to take it on from a comedy angle.

Stuff the Ducks

Stuff the Ducks is a piece that was supposed to be inspired by looking through the last photo you had taken and finding a stranger in the background/margin. The piece turned into a rant.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

A Southern Estate Sale

We always thought the big white house was haunted. My friends and I would sneak through the yard on the way to school despite this association with the underworld, but that didn't mean I didn't walk quickly and keep one eye on the windows. I know I saw a shadow in one of the upstairs windows several times, and I'm not afraid to say that I broke into a sprint at the sight. Fright made me fast I learned as I ran through, over, and past my friends, nothing short of a pell-mell every-boy-and-girl-for-themselves charge to school.

The Most Boring Picture Album Ever

Image Tuesdays Writing Prompt

Mr. Pubbeedle was a curious little man who had befriended Uncle Herbie in a time before mine. I was never certain why they felt they needed to stop by our flat so often, but I suspect it was because mother was such a good cook and had the spine of a jellyfish. She really could not say "no" to her little brother Herbie. Despite it being common knowledge by everyone in our area that he was a grifter and had never made an honest dime in his misspent life. Perhaps she felt sorry for him. Or maybe she lived vicariously through his exploits and narrow escapes, imagining herself as some sort of flapper, dancing the night away in an underground speakeasy.

Rained Out

The piece Rained Out is more on the serious side.

Skipping Coins

Skipping Coins is another fun take on a silly daily prompt.

Taking the Cake

Taking the Cake is a prompt response. I decided to turn the prompt on its head a little bit.

Lost

Lost - The assignment for this piece was to write about losing and what you learned from it. I decided to write a fictional short story about losing and lessons unlearned from the PoV of a young boy. This one turned out to be much more well received than the original, so the rewrite was a good thing...

An Introduction is a non-fiction piece. The assignment was to capture someone's character.

Tree of Life
